DEE DEE CHERIEL

Born in the hippy-town of Eugene, Oregon, Nalini Cheriel rebelled against her Indian father's traditional upbringing, and immersed herself in the art and music cultures that surrounded her. Her iconic images and textures over song-lyrics with graffitied backgrounds reflect the D.I.Y. pop-culture of her tumultuous Oregon upbringing. Cheriel began at age 16 creating stencils and silkscreens for the Oregon punk scene. She started her own band and record label and passionately designed all the record covers and T-shirts. The artist lived abroad in Honduras and Chile, where she painted with other artists, and sought inspiration from other cultures. Upon returning to the US, armed with a college degree from the University of Oregon, Cheriel returned to playing music in seminal girl-rock bands and painting. Cheriel began spending time in London and India where she sought to explore her Indian roots and her art became more reflective of iconic Hindu and temple imagery. The dualistic nature of her work reflects the clashing of her Indian/ American upbringing.

Now living in Echo Park, CA, the artist further explores opposites, using stencils, silkscreens and other mixed media to re-create the grit of urban walls juxtaposed againstnature. The backdrop of the urban landscapes resemble primitive cave drawings. Her crude black line renderings of naked women are outsider art and folk art-inspired. These images are then infused with a vibrant jungle aesthetic, bold-colored flowers, plants, trees and wild animals. Within each painting is a crude balance of anger and beauty, peace and discomfort, urban and Eden, debauchery and spirituality.
